# How Do I Contribute to My Bitcoin IRA?

A contribution is new personal money added to your IRA for a specific tax year. After the money is credited to the IRA, it can be used to buy bitcoin inside the account.

## Before you contribute

Confirm:

* The IRA you want to fund;
* The tax year for the contribution;
* How much you have already contributed to all of your Traditional and Roth IRAs for that year; and
* That you have enough eligible taxable compensation for the contribution.

Contribution limits can change each year.

## 2026 IRA contribution limits

For the 2026 tax year, the combined personal contribution limit across all of your Traditional and Roth IRAs is:

| Age | Maximum combined contribution |
| ---- |
| Under age 50 | $7,500 |
| Age 50 or older | $8,600 |

The $8,600 limit includes the 2026 catch-up contribution of $1,100.

Your limit may be lower if your taxable compensation is less than the annual limit. Roth IRA eligibility may also be reduced or eliminated based on income.

> **Information:** The limit is combined across your personal Traditional and Roth IRAs. It is not a separate limit for every account.

The contribution deadline is generally the tax-return filing due date for that tax year, excluding extensions.

## Contribution, transfer or rollover?

How you should fund the IRA depends on where the money is now.

| Funding method | Where the money comes from | Uses the personal annual IRA contribution limit? |
| ---- |
| Contribution | Your personal funds | Yes |
| Transfer | Another IRA custodian | No |
| Rollover | An eligible workplace retirement plan or eligible IRA distribution | No |

Choose the correct funding method before moving money. Transfers and rollovers have different account-compatibility, timing and reporting requirements.

2. Select the available option to fund the IRA.
3. Choose **Contribution** as the funding method.
4. Enter the amount you want to contribute.
5. Select the tax year for the contribution.
6. Review the IRA, amount and tax year before continuing.
7. Follow the Heritage IRA funding instructions shown for your account.
8. Wait for the contribution to appear as available cash in the IRA.

Use only the funding instructions displayed inside your account. Do not reuse instructions from another customer or account.

## Buy bitcoin with your IRA funds

After the contribution appears as available IRA cash:

1. Open the bitcoin purchase experience connected to your IRA.
2. Enter the amount of IRA cash you want to use.
3. Review the estimated bitcoin amount, spread and transaction details.
4. Confirm that the correct IRA is selected.
5. Submit the purchase.

The IRA must remain the buyer and owner of the bitcoin throughout the process.

> **Warning:** Do not send personally owned bitcoin to the IRA as a contribution. Do not buy bitcoin personally and later try to label it as IRA-owned.
