  2. Scroll to the interactive map

  3. Search or select your location on the map

  4. Select a pin to view the location details

How a Bitcoin ATM Works

Using one of our Bitcoin ATMs is simple. Tap "I Want Crypto" on the touchscreen, select Bitcoin (BTC), and scan your wallet's QR code. Insert your cash, review the transaction details, including the amount, transaction speed, and fees, then confirm.

You'll need a bitcoin wallet on your phone to receive your purchase, more on that below.

The whole process is designed to be intuitive. Most first-time users complete their transaction in under 5 minutes.

You can also buy Litecoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies at our ATMs.

Setting Up a Bitcoin Wallet

You'll need a mobile wallet app to receive your bitcoin. Think of it as a digital account for your cryptocurrency.

If you don't have one yet, download a free wallet like Wallet of Satoshi or Blue Wallet from your app store. As per our Terms and Conditions, a self-custody wallet where you control the seed phrase is required for purchasing bitcoin through our services.

Your wallet's receiving address comes with a QR code. You'll scan that code at the ATM to tell the machine where to send your bitcoin.

Buying Bitcoin At A Bitcoin Well ATM

  1. Arrive at the ATM and select "Buy Crypto."

  2. Select "Bitcoin."

  3. Scan your bitcoin address using your wallet app. If you're not sure how to find it, select "Find bitcoin address."

  4. Insert your bills one at a time into the bill acceptor. Review the anti-fraud message then select "Continue." Only use wrinkle and tear-free bills. If you have a promo code, enter it now.

  5. Once you're finished entering cash, select "Send my bitcoin."

  6. Enter your email address for a transaction receipt.

  7. Select "Send my bitcoin" on the final confirmation screen to broadcast your transaction.

Note: Our bitcoin ATMs only accept cash.

Want your bitcoin faster? Select the "Priority" option and pay a small additional fee to speed things up.

Using Cash Vouchers

Cash vouchers let you buy bitcoin privately with cash at a Bitcoin Well ATM, without needing a verified account. They're a great option if you're using a Lite account or just prefer to keep things simple.

We've put together a more detailed article walking through the full process here: [Link]

Scanning Your QR Code

  1. Open your bitcoin wallet.

  2. Tap "Receive" to display your receiving address.

  3. Present the QR code to the scanner.

  4. Hold your phone still at a 45 degree angle until the screen advances.

Note: If your QR code isn't scanning, don't worry. Our machines use a few different types of scanners, so sometimes it just takes a small adjustment. Try changing the angle or distance you're holding your phone at. [Link to scanning video]

ID Verification At The ATM

Most small purchases don't require ID. Canadian regulations require identity verification only for transactions exceeding $950 CAD, and this applies to all Bitcoin ATMs nationwide, not just ours.

We use Sumsub, a trusted third-party service, to complete the verification process in minutes.

Daily Transaction Limits At The ATM

It depends on your account type:

  • Lite account: Up to $995 per transaction.

  • Verified account: No limit on direct, on-chain bitcoin purchases made with cash. Just select "Buy Crypto," then "BTC," scan your wallet address, and insert cash.

  • Cash vouchers: Limited to $950 per transaction, up to $3,000 daily.

Selling Bitcoin For Cash At The ATM

Our bitcoin ATMs do not dispense cash, but you can sell your bitcoin and receive CAD via e-Transfer through our online portal. Visit app.bitcoinwell.com/signup to get started.

Using US Dollars At Our Canadian ATMs

Our Bitcoin ATMs only accept Canadian cash. Credit and debit cards aren't accepted.
