How to Set Up and Use BlueWallet

BlueWallet is a self-custodial Bitcoin wallet for iPhone and Android. Your private keys stay with you, which also means you are responsible for protecting the wallet backup.

Information: Self-custody means BlueWallet and Bitcoin Well cannot reset your wallet or recover your funds. Your recovery words are the backup.

1. Create a Bitcoin wallet

  1. Download BlueWallet only from its official website or the app-store links listed there.
  2. Open BlueWallet.
  3. Tap Add now or the + button.
  4. Choose Bitcoin.
  5. Give the wallet a clear name.
  6. Tap Create.

For most beginners, the default Native SegWit wallet is appropriate. Change advanced wallet types only when you understand the compatibility and recovery implications.

Tip: Complete the wallet backup before receiving bitcoin, then start with a small test transaction.

2. Back up the wallet

  1. Open the wallet.
  2. Tap the menu and open Wallet details.
  3. Choose Export/Backup.
  4. Write the recovery words down in order and store them offline.
  5. Confirm that the backup is readable before depositing bitcoin.

Warning: Never photograph, upload, email, or share the recovery words. Anyone with them can spend the bitcoin. Bitcoin Well and BlueWallet support will never ask for them.

3. Receive bitcoin from Bitcoin Well

  1. Open the Bitcoin wallet you created.
  2. Tap Receive.
  3. Copy the Bitcoin address or display its QR code.
  4. In Bitcoin Well, paste this address as the delivery address.
  5. Compare the beginning and end of the pasted address with BlueWallet before confirming.

BlueWallet can generate a fresh receiving address for each payment. Using a new address improves privacy.

4. Send bitcoin

  1. Open the wallet and tap Send.
  2. Scan or paste the recipient's Bitcoin address.
  3. Enter the amount.
  4. Choose an appropriate network fee.
  5. Review the network, address, amount, and fee before confirming.

Warning: Bitcoin transactions cannot normally be reversed. Confirm every detail before sending.

5. Recover the wallet

On a trusted installation of BlueWallet, tap + and choose Import wallet, then enter the recovery words in the correct order. Perform recovery privately on a device you trust.
