How to Set Up and Use Wallet of Satoshi

Wallet of Satoshi is a Lightning-first mobile wallet designed for fast Bitcoin payments. It offers self-custodial access globally, while custodial access is available only in supported regions.

Information: In self-custody mode, you control the keys and recovery materials. In custodial mode, Wallet of Satoshi holds the keys for you. This guide focuses on self-custody.

Back up your self-custody wallet

Wallet of Satoshi may offer an encrypted Google Drive backup or a manual 12-word recovery phrase.

For a manual backup:

  1. Write all 12 words down in the correct order.
  2. Check that every word is spelled correctly.
  3. Store the backup offline in a secure location.
  4. Consider keeping a second physical copy in a separate secure location.

Warning: Never photograph, email, text, upload, or share your recovery phrase. Anyone who has it can control your bitcoin. Wallet of Satoshi and Bitcoin Well cannot recover a lost phrase.

Receive bitcoin over Lightning

Lightning is the preferred way to fund and use Wallet of Satoshi.

  1. Tap Receive.
  2. Your Lightning Address or LNURL QR code appears by default.
  3. To request an exact amount, tap Amount/Note and enter the amount.
  4. Copy the generated Lightning invoice or share its QR code.
  5. In Bitcoin Well, choose Lightning as the delivery network and paste the invoice or Lightning Address.
  6. Confirm the amount and destination before completing the transaction.

Tip: Start with a small test transaction before moving a larger balance, especially when using a new wallet or receiving method.

Move on-chain bitcoin into Wallet of Satoshi

Wallet of Satoshi's on-chain deposit feature does not keep a separate on-chain balance. It uses a submarine swap to convert the deposit into Lightning bitcoin and charges a service fee.

For a more transparent network conversion, use Bitcoin Well's Swapper:

  1. In Wallet of Satoshi, create a Lightning invoice for the amount you want to receive.
  2. In Bitcoin Well, open the Swap page and choose Lightning as the destination network.
  3. Paste the Wallet of Satoshi invoice or Lightning destination.
  4. Bitcoin Well will provide a unique on-chain swap address.
  5. Send your on-chain bitcoin to that address.
  6. Bitcoin Well converts it to Lightning and delivers it to Wallet of Satoshi.

Information: Bitcoin Well's swap service converts between the Bitcoin blockchain and Lightning for a 0.5% fee. Check the fee shown in your Bitcoin Well account before confirming because pricing can change.

Send over Lightning

  1. Tap Send.
  2. Scan the recipient's QR code or paste their Lightning invoice, Lightning Address, or LNURL.
  3. Enter the amount if it is not already included.
  4. Review the recipient, amount, and displayed fees.
  5. Tap Send to complete the payment.

Warning: Lightning payments and Bitcoin transactions are generally irreversible. Always confirm the destination, network, and amount before sending.

Restore your self-custody wallet

Open Wallet of Satoshi and choose Restore Wallet.

  • For a Google Drive backup, sign in with the same Google account and enter the encryption password if one was set.
  • For a recovery phrase, choose Restore from Seed Phrase and enter all 12 words in the correct order.

Allow the wallet time to synchronize, then confirm that the expected balance and transaction history appear.
