How to Buy Bitcoin Using Online Bill Payment on Lightning

Online bill payment lets you buy bitcoin by sending a payment from your Canadian bank to a Lightning wallet. It is also useful for scheduled recurring buys.

This workflow is available only to Canadian accounts. Bank bill payments normally take about three business days to reach Bitcoin Well. The live payment-method selector shows the processing time and limits that apply to your account.

The payee account number is tied to your Bitcoin Well account. Do not share it publicly or use details copied from someone else's account.

Add the payee in online banking

  1. Sign in to your bank.
  2. Open the bill-payment section and add a new payee.
  3. Search for the payee name shown in Bitcoin Well.
  4. Enter the payee account number exactly.
  5. Save the payee.

Make a one-time or recurring buy

  1. Send a bill payment for the CAD amount you want to spend on bitcoin.
  2. For recurring buys, schedule the payment in your online banking app.
  3. Allow about three business days for the bank payment to arrive.
  4. When the payment is processed, Bitcoin Well converts the received CAD using the applicable rate and spread, then sends bitcoin to the Lightning destination selected in your account.

After setting up the payee, you can make another buy directly from your bank without signing in each time. Check the saved Lightning destination before beginning a recurring schedule.

About Lightning delivery

Lightning delivery avoids an on-chain miner fee. Bitcoin Well applies the applicable rate and spread when it processes the payment.

Confirm that the saved Lightning destination is still valid before scheduling recurring payments.
