How to Sell Bitcoin

Sell bitcoin from a self-custody wallet and receive Canadian dollars through the payout methods available in your Bitcoin Well account.


Create a sell order


  1. Sign in to Bitcoin Well and select Sell bitcoin.
  2. Enter the amount of CAD you want to receive.
  3. Select a Payout method.
  4. Select or add the recipient.
  5. Review the recipient details, then select Review and pay.

Available Canadian payout methods and processing times


The live payout selector shows the methods, transaction ranges, and processing times available to your account. Review those details before creating the order.


Recipient email addresses, security answers, and bank details are private. Sell addresses are public identifiers but can reveal sensitive transaction metadata. Do not post an unredacted order publicly; share an address only through verified Bitcoin Well support when needed.


Send on-chain bitcoin


  1. On the payment screen, select On-chain.
  2. Open your Bitcoin wallet and select Send.
  3. Scan the QR code or copy the complete Bitcoin Well sell address.
  4. Send the exact BTC amount shown for the sell order.
  5. Wait for the required blockchain confirmation.


Bitcoin Well provides an option to save the on-chain sell address for future on-demand sales without signing in. Label it clearly in your wallet before reusing it.


Lightning selling is available only to Canadian accounts.


Send bitcoin over Lightning


  1. On the payment screen, select Lightning.
  2. Select Generate invoice.
  3. Open your Lightning wallet and pay the generated invoice.
  4. Confirm in your wallet that the payment completed.

Bitcoin Well also provides a reusable Lightning Address in the format your-welltag@sell.btcw.app. Replace your-welltag with your Bitcoin Well welltag. Use it only from a Lightning wallet and confirm the payout recipient saved in your account before sending.


Generate a new Lightning invoice for each sell order. Do not reuse an expired or previously paid invoice.


Receive your CAD payout


Bitcoin Well converts the bitcoin after it is received and sends CAD using the payout method selected for the order. Interac e-Transfer is shown as instant, while Bill Payment via Bank is shown as three business days. Use the live timing displayed in your account.


If an Interac payout is delayed, contact your bank first to ask whether the incoming transfer is being held.
