How to Pay Bills and Credit-Card Balances With Bitcoin

Use bitcoin from self-custody to pay eligible bills and credit cards in Canada through Bitcoin Well.

Pay Bills is available only to Canadian accounts. The payment methods, limits, and availability shown in your account are the ones that apply to you.

Add a payee

  1. Sign in to Bitcoin Well and select Pay bills.

The current Pay Bills page with on-chain and Lightning choices

  1. Select Add payee.

The Add payee form

  1. Search for and select the biller.
  2. Enter the account number from your bill.
  3. Add an optional label to help you recognize the payee.
  4. Select Add.

Confirm the payee and account number against a current bill. Bitcoin payments cannot normally be reversed after they are sent.

Pay with on-chain bitcoin

  1. Select the payee and enter the CAD amount.
  2. Select On-chain, then Review.
  3. Open your Bitcoin wallet and scan the QR code or copy the address.
  4. Send the exact BTC amount shown.
  5. Use a network fee appropriate for the time sensitivity of the bill.

Bitcoin Well holds the displayed rate for five minutes. Send the exact BTC amount shown within that time. The BTC amount does not include the miner fee charged by your wallet.

Pay over Lightning

  1. Select the payee and enter the CAD amount.
  2. Select Lightning, then Review.
  3. Open your Lightning wallet and pay the invoice shown.
  4. Confirm that the Lightning payment completed.

Lightning invoices are time-limited and normally single-use. Generate a new invoice if the first one expires.

Allow time for the bank payment

Bitcoin may reach Bitcoin Well quickly, but the biller receives a traditional bank payment. Allow at least three business days before the bill's due date.

Save a clear payee label and begin with a small payment when using a biller for the first time.
