How to Set Up and Use the Blockstream App

The Blockstream app, formerly Blockstream Green, is a self-custodial software wallet for mobile and desktop. In a standard mobile wallet, the private keys are stored on your device.

Information: Self-custody means Blockstream and Bitcoin Well cannot access your wallet, reset your PIN, or recover your funds. Your recovery phrase is the backup that restores access.

Set up a new wallet

  1. Download the app from an official source listed by Blockstream.
  2. Open the app and select Get Started.

Your wallet is ready, but it is not safely recoverable until you complete the backup.

Back up the wallet

  1. Open the wallet and tap Security.
  2. Tap Backup Now.
  3. Write the recovery phrase down carefully in the correct order.
  4. Complete the verification check in the app.
  5. Create a PIN if prompted.
  6. Store the written recovery phrase securely offline.

Warning: Never save the recovery phrase in a screenshot, cloud note, email, or support chat. Anyone with it can spend your bitcoin.
