Secure Jade Plus before funding it

Complete the trust, backup, and transaction checks below before sending a meaningful Bitcoin balance to Blockstream Jade Plus. The goal is not to enable every feature. It is to establish a simple setup whose origin, firmware, recovery backup, receiving address, and signing flow you have verified.

Jade Plus setup screen without recovery words

Official reference: Set up Jade. Blockstream interface images may change with firmware.

Do not digitize wallet secrets. Write the recovery phrase offline. Never type or paste it into a phone, computer, website, coordinator, cloud form, chat, or support ticket. Enter it only directly on trusted hardware during a documented recovery flow.

Check the source and device

Buy Jade Plus from Blockstream or a seller you trust. Inspect the parcel, packaging, and device for damage or signs that they were opened or modified. Packaging alone cannot prove authenticity, so run Jade's Genuine Check during setup. If the check reports that the device is not genuine, stop and contact Blockstream through a support channel reached from its official website.

Install the Blockstream companion app only from Blockstream's official download page. Avoid advertisements, links in unsolicited messages, browser extensions, and search results that imitate a download page. See Verify Jade Plus and avoid wallet scams for a broader verification checklist.

Update through an official method

Install current firmware with the Blockstream app or another update method from Blockstream's official Jade support pages before creating the long-term wallet. Review the release notes and confirm that the app and device identify the expected model and firmware. Blockstream also provides instructions for air-gapped JadeLink updates and manual firmware verification when you need those options.

Do not rush firmware updates on a funded setup. First confirm that your recovery backup works. For multisig, update one signer, complete a test signature, and only then change another signer so a known-working quorum remains available.

Create and verify a new wallet

For a normal setup, let Jade create a new recovery phrase. Use external dice only when intentionally following the reviewed procedure in Create a recovery phrase with dice on Jade Plus.

  1. Work privately, away from cameras, microphones, windows, and other people.
  2. Record every recovery word in numbered order on paper or another durable offline medium.
  3. Complete Jade's built-in phrase verification.
  4. Check spelling and order again before storing the backup.
  5. Keep Jade and its recovery phrase in separate secure locations.

The PIN protects access to the physical device; it does not replace the recovery phrase. In Jade's oracle-backed PIN mode, three incorrect attempts cause Jade and the oracle to delete their encryption keys. Recovery then requires the recovery phrase and any BIP39 passphrase. Finish the backup before relying on the PIN.

Verify on the screen that holds the key

Treat the phone or computer as potentially compromised. It can replace a receiving address or alter a transaction before sending it to Jade.

When receiving:

  1. Generate a new address in the companion wallet.
  2. Ask Jade to display and verify it.
  3. Compare the complete address, not only the first and last characters.
  4. Use it only when the device and companion displays match.

When sending, verify the network, complete destination address, amount, fee, and any change information Jade displays. Reject the transaction if anything differs from your intent.

USB is simple; Bluetooth is convenient; QR can keep transaction data off USB and Bluetooth. None makes a malicious companion harmless. An air gap changes transport, not the need to verify the data.

Prove the setup before increasing the balance

Send a small amount to a hardware-verified address. Confirm receipt, then spend part of it while checking all transaction details on Jade. Record the wallet fingerprint and one address already verified on the device; these are sensitive metadata, not spending secrets.

Finally, verify the backup using Jade's documented Temporary Signer fingerprint check or a spare-device hardware recovery. Do not reset the only device controlling meaningful funds merely to test. Follow Test a Bitcoin wallet recovery, and increase the balance only after the restored wallet matches the known fingerprint and verified address.

Add a BIP39 passphrase, Temporary Signer workflow, or duress PIN only after this baseline is recoverable.
