Create a recovery phrase with dice on Jade Plus
Blockstream's dice procedure lets you choose the first 11 or 23 words of a BIP39 recovery phrase. Jade Plus then calculates a final word with the correct checksum. This gives you control over the randomness, but every roll and transcription step is another chance to make a mistake. Practise on a reset, unfunded device before creating a real wallet.

Work offline and privately. Remove cameras, phones, voice assistants, smart glasses, and other recording devices. Never enter dice results or recovery words into a phone, computer, website, coordinator, cloud form, chat, or support ticket. Enter words only directly on trusted Jade hardware in its documented flow.
Decide whether you need external dice
Jade already combines multiple randomness sources when it generates a wallet. The dice method is appropriate only when you understand Blockstream's published mapping, have fair dice, can work privately, and will test recovery.
Do not create a phrase by choosing memorable words, inventing a sentence, shuffling cards without a reviewed method, or improvising a conversion for different dice. A biased mapping can make some words more likely and reduce security.
Gather the exact materials
Blockstream's method uses:
- two fair 16-sided dice marked 1 through 16;
- one fair 8-sided die marked 1 through 8;
- Blockstream's current lookup table printed from its official source;
- a reset Jade or Jade Plus with no funded wallet loaded;
- a pen, numbered recovery card, and flat rolling surface.
The three dice produce 16 × 16 × 8 = 2,048 equally likely combinations, matching the 2,048 words in the English BIP39 list. One roll of all three dice selects one word without a modulo conversion.
The lookup table is public. Your roll sequence and selected words are secret. Avoid a shared printer for any sheet on which recovery words will later be written.
Generate the first 11 or 23 words
- Label the 16-sided dice D1 and D2 and the 8-sided die D3.
- Roll all three together.
- Find the D1, D2, and D3 combination in Blockstream's table.
- Write the matching word in the next numbered position.
- Check its spelling and position before continuing.
- Repeat until you have 11 words for a 12-word phrase or 23 words for a 24-word phrase.
Roll again if a die is cocked, falls off the surface, or cannot be read. Do not choose the outcome you prefer. Read the complete numbered list back once; correct words in the wrong order produce a different wallet.
Let Jade calculate the final word
The final BIP39 word contains entropy and checksum information:
- in a 12-word phrase, the final word carries 7 entropy bits and 4 checksum bits;
- in a 24-word phrase, the final word carries 3 entropy bits and 8 checksum bits.
That is why an arbitrary final word is usually invalid. Follow Blockstream's current recovery or Temporary Signer instructions, enter the first 11 or 23 words directly on Jade, and ask Jade to calculate the final word rather than enter an existing one. Current firmware may begin on a randomly selected valid choice; use that random choice instead of selecting a word for its meaning.

Write the calculated word in the correct final position. It is part of the recovery phrase—not an optional BIP39 passphrase.
Back up and test the new phrase
- Make a durable offline copy with every word numbered.
- Check spelling and order against the BIP39 list.
- Keep it out of photos, email, cloud storage, notes apps, password managers, coordinators, and support channels.
- Store it separately from Jade.
- Create the wallet and record its fingerprint and one address verified on Jade.
- Restore it using spare trusted hardware or Jade's documented Temporary Signer flow.
- Confirm the fingerprint and verified address.
- Receive and spend a small test amount before moving more.
A checksum catches only some transcription errors. Successful hardware recovery and an address match provide stronger evidence. If you later add a passphrase, first read Use a BIP39 passphrase on Jade Plus and test the new wallet separately.
